Leaving on a Boeing 757-200 Jet Plane
Thursday, September 29, 2005-9:50 AM
Tomorrow morning I'll board a Boeing jet on my way to an undisclosed Asian nation where I'll transfer to different plane and make the long voyage back to the United States of America. It's my last full day in China in the forseeable future.
I feel like throwing up.
The last two years I've lived in China. For most of that time I didn't even consider going back to the States. The United States feels just as much like a foreign country as China did before I ever came here.
Things are going to be more expensive in the States. Especially since I'm returning to unemployment, spending a buck on a cup of coffee is going to hurt. And I've heard gas prices are a little high.
But what's really bothering me is the nagging feeling like there's something in China I should be doing now, while I have the chance. There is still some unfinished business here. I've never been to Ningxia, Anhui, or Taiwan. I've never seen Tiger Leaping Gorge.
I don't want to go home.
There are some things I won't miss. I won't miss the rats, bats, and cockroaches that surround my apartment. I won't miss motorcycle drivers that nearly run over pedestrians. I won't miss crowded buses or smoky Internet bars.
But, of course, I will miss Natasha who will, for the time being stay in China.
Okay. Enough sentimental stuff. I still have to pack.
